Management of the molecular laboratory in Gorongosa National Park, including, but not limited to, the coordination of research activities by students and visiting scientists, maintenance of laboratory equipment, procurement and inventory of equipment and supplies, enforcement of proper safety procedures in the lab, performing extraction and amplification of DNA, assistance with the work of visiting scientists, assistance with the training of students in the Gorongosa BioEd program, and development of relationships with similar institutions in Mozambique and elsewhere.

Description:
Management of the molecular laboratory in Gorongosa National Park, including, but not limited to, the coordination of research activities by students and visiting scientists, maintenance of laboratory equipment, procurement and inventory of equipment and supplies, enforcement of proper safety procedures in the lab, performing extraction and amplification of DNA, assistance with the work of visiting scientists, assistance with the training of students in the Gorongosa BioEd program, and development of relationships with similar institutions in Mozambique and elsewhere.

Location:
E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Laboratory, Gorongosa National Park, Sofala
Duration of employment:
A three-year contract, including a six-month probation period

Compensation:
Commensurable to experience and education

Requirements:
• At least two years of experience of working in a biochemical or molecular laboratory • A minimum of B.Sc. in biological field (or equivalent, such as licenciatura)
• A good comprehension of spoken and written English language
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to work in a diverse, multicultural environment
• Ability to live and work at a remote location, under occasionally challenging conditions

Specific duties:
1. Laboratory management and coordination
a. Maintenance of laboratory equipment and chemical storage
b. Management of consumable resources, including the procurement of laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment
c. Enforcement of safety protocols for handling, storage, and disposal of specialized laboratory supplies and chemicals
d. Oversight of the safe use of the laboratory facilities by students and researchers
e. Planning of the use of laboratory space by students and visiting researchers

2. Research Activities
a. Participation in the DNA barcoding program of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Laboratory, including performing DNA extraction and amplification
b. Keeping track of DNA samples and submission of the resulting sequences to appropriate databases
c. Assisting visiting researchers in their project activities
d. Compile quarterly and annual reports of research activities as requested by the Associate Director or Director
e. Strengthen relationships to other research institutions and universities in Mozambique and abroad through collaboration and outreach efforts

3. Training, Education and Outreach Activities
a. Train laboratory users in safe and effective procedures and working conditions
b. Assist in educational activities conducted at the laboratory, such as courses and workshops offered by the BioEd program
c. Lead tours of the laboratory for select visitors to Gorongosa National Park
d. Participation in media outreach on social media and other formats

4. General
a. Assist with any other task as reasonably instructed by the Associate Director or Director.
