“Reducing the use of plastics is making room for life” was the theme of this year’s World Environment Day celebration on June 5. Events organized by Gorongosa National Park’s Conservation Education program brought together community leaders and residents from Nhanguo, Chitengo, CEC, and Mapombwé to mark the occasion.
Discussions on environmental awareness, community clean-up efforts, waste collection, and cultural activities—all reflecting a shared commitment to protecting and preserving the environment.
Each community concluded its celebration by planting trees and enjoying music, entertainment, and traditional dances, symbolizing unity and a collective dedication to a more sustainable future.
Samuel Figueira, district supervisor of the Conservation Education program, represented the Park and stressed the importance of cooperation and collective action to preserve the environment. He highlighted Gorongosa Park’s commitment to education and raising awareness among local residents about sustainability through educational programs and activities.
“Environmental protection and sustainable development depend on collaboration between the Park and local communities.” Figueira said.
