Balancing environmental conservation with community development was the focus of a two-day meeting between representatives from the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), various sectors of Gorongosa National Park, and government official Dec. 12-13.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss biodiversity preservation and sustainable development strategies in the communities bordering the park. Discussion goals included aligning Gorongosa’s conservation initiatives with the needs of surrounding communities, ensuring mutual growth and sustainable development. Topics discussed included design, regulations, and boundaries of protected areas; monitoring and management plans; and sustainable natural resource management and among other critical issues.
The meeting allowed stakeholders to share ideas and address district-level concerns. Recommendations included identifying additional community conservation areas, training community members in conservation practices, and developing infrastructure to benefit local communities.
