The Gorongosa Restoration Project invites all interested parties (Companies) to submit proposals for the lease of a helicopter to be used for a wildlife count in the Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique.

Objective: Aerial count of all large wildlife in an area of 210.000 ha (two hundred and ten thousand) using line transects. Transects are predetermined and are located 500m apart to achieve full coverage of the area. In additional line transects totaling 550km are surveyed using the same methodology as for the block. Total flying time is estimated at approximately 90 hours. More info here.

The Gorongosa Restoration Project (Parque Nacional da Gorongosa) in Mozambique is likely the largest wildlife restoration story in Africa. In 2008, the Government of Mozambique and the “Carr” Foundation formed the “Gorongosa Restoration Project,” a 20-year Public-Private Partnership for the joint management of the Park and for human development in the communities neighboring the Park. On June 7, 2018, the Government of Mozambique signed an extension of the management agreement for Gorongosa National Park for another 25 years.

Result of the tender
The successful contractor will enter into a signed and binding service agreement with GRP.
Successful party will need to obtain the necessary flight clearances;
• Possibility of the client sourcing an appropriately rated and experienced external pilot to be added to the contractor’s AOC and insurance at the latter’s expense;

Count specific equipment and conditions:
• Appropriate on-board navigation equipment for navigation and data entry. Specifically, a GPS-based system linked to an on-board notebook computer is to be used. The software must be able to import the necessary ESRI shapefiles for navigation, must display the real-time position of the helicopter on the notebook screen during flight and must allow direct data entry of species and numbers that are observed together with their geographic coordinates;
• Necessary plugs / inverter to keep the notebook computer and GPS provided with power during the count;
• Push to Talk communication on-board and headsets for pilot + 4;
• Goggles for observers in the back (with a preference for yellow-tint);
• Marker bars that indicate a strip width of 250 m at either side of the helicopter when flying at 160 feet;
• Count is undertaken with all 4 doors removed;
• Client will provide navigator/data entry operator as well as observers
