The vision for turning Vila Gorongosa into a model community for rural Mozambique will be featured at the UN-HABITAT conference: “Urban October, 31 days for a Better Urban Future.”

The “Sustainable Development Framework for Vila de Gorongosa 2030”, includes making the community safer; building new schools, markets, health clinics and playgrounds; and creating new job opportunities.

Visioning for a more sustainable Villa Gorongosa started with an signed agreement in late 2020 between the Gorongosa Restoration Project and local officials, and a pledge to involve area citizens in the urban planning process, a critical step for improving the well-being of the population and preserving the park’s ecosystem.

Community meetings began in earnest in late 2021. The most recent meeting of councilors, Mozambican government officials, community leaders and civil society individuals was organized by the Gorongosa City Council  and the Gorongosa Restoration Project. The session, held in early September, focused on supporting the Vila Gorongosa municipality during the implementing phases of the Development Framework.

The Vila Gorongosa project is a partnership between the Government of Mozambique, Gorongosa National Park, the Gorongosa Restoration Project – GRP and UN-HABITAT.

Urban October is a 31-day UN-HABITAT event designed to raise awareness, promote participation, generate knowledge and engage the international community in sustainable development.
