“Unite! Investing to prevent Violence against Women and Girls!”

On November 27, 2024, Gorongosa National Park (GNP) hosted a vibrant celebration in honor of “International Day of the Girl”  – celebrated on the 11th of October of every year, with the theme “A Girl’s Vision for the Future”. The activity started at 8:00 am, with an exciting football match between the girls from Nhamatanda and Gorongosa, where the Nhamatanda team emerged as the winner and received a trophy for the achievement, followed by a snack and a Career Fair.

The opening ceremony was attended by several individuals from the GNP management team to the local government represented by Mrs. Graciana Marta de Jesus Pita, Provincial Director of Women, Gender, Action and Social in Gorongosa, who plays a fundamental role in promoting gender equality, protection of women’s rights and freedoms.

After the opening, short videos of the girls’ club were shown, followed by inspiring performances by girls from the clubs and young people from various locations, coming from GNP’s Sustainable Development Zone districts (Cheringoma, Muanza, Dondo, Nhamatanda, Maringue and Gorongosa) , in addition to young finalist scholarship holders as models.

The event also included a musical moment with Ganizane Marcelino (a blind boy) and the Girls’ Clubs Choir, providing an atmosphere of celebration and unity. The sharing of life stories and a debate about the future of girls from ZDS in PNG were significant moments, culminating in a collective commitment to the phrase “My vision of the future is…”.

The closing ceremony was marked by inspiring interventions from Elisa Langa, Director of the GNP -Human Development Department and the Provincial Director of Women, Gender, Action and Social. After a family photo, participants enjoyed lunch at the Chikalango restaurant in Chitengo, as a form of celebration.

In the afternoon, a safari was organized for the girls’ clubs, providing a unique experience amidst the park’s lush nature. It was a day full of learning, exchanging experiences and celebrating the girls’ strength and determination!
