A new job training center launched in June is expected to increase local income and diversify the area economy by strengthening skills, improving the technical capacity of the workforce, and creating self-employment opportunities for the local population.
The center aims to improve the living conditions of people in communities near Gorongosa Park by offering courses in cooking, carpentry, mechanics, locksmithing, plumbing, and construction, among other trades. The classes will be available for young people, women, mothers, fathers, and community leaders.
Training will also be provided in nutrition, food safety, and food preservation to promote good eating habits, a diversified diet, and consequently, improve the health of the people in the communities where they live.
The Alberto Cassino Vocational Training and Labor Studies Institute was inaugurated on June 5 in the district of Gorongosa during a ceremony led by Osvaldo Petersburgo, Secretary of State for Youth and Employment.
Construction of the center was supported by the Gorongosa Restoration Project as part of its Sustainable Livelihoods Development Program in partnership with Right to Play and Resilience, and funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Good to hear that Gorongosa and its people and animals are doing well. I stayed a few times in Gorongosa in 1977-79 and have fond memories. A lot has happened since that time but you (and I) have survived!! “A luta continua”; boa sorte !!
You guys are doing a superb job in uplifting the communities around the Park, expanding the wild animal population, re-introducing animals that were wiped out during the civil war, and allowing tourists the opportunity of once again being able to visit such a superb landscape. Thank you!
HI,
Would like to learn more about the Sustainable Livelihoods Program.
Thanks,
