World Environment Day is an international day for celebrating the change makers who strive to protect our planet and its inhabitants, especially the environment with an emphasis on protecting clean air, clean water, plants and wildlife.
On June 5, local communities near Gorongosa National Park joined Park employees and others to celebrate World Environment Day under the slogan: “Our Earth. Our Future.”
Known as the “Restoration Generation,” these local groups reflected on the need to:
- Take the lead in environmental conservation processes;
- Promote actions aimed at changing behavior;
- Keep the environment healthy for the common good; and
- Promote tree planting to maintain ecological processes.
All of the districts in the Sustainable Development Zone, including the communities and villages in Gorongosa, Nhamatanda, Dondo, Muanza, Cheringoma and Maringue districts joined the employees of Gorongosa National Park to celebrate World Environment Day under the slogan: “Our Earth. Our Future.”
Elementary school students, community members, local leaders, Natural Resources Management Committees, and private citizens participated in a wide variety of events such as attending theater performances on environmental conservation, playing games, creating ecological pots, and planting trees.
Gorongosa National Park employees marked the day by conducting a general camp clean-up and attending a presentation about the importance of environmental conservation and strengthening their individual commitment to sustainability and ecological restoration.
In the city of Chimoio, science technicians Beto Tenente and Ivanilda Chiemo represented the Science Department at an event organized by the University of Zambezia’s Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Natural Resources. Beto and Ivanilda showcased a variety of Gorongosa products and spoke with attendees about the Park’s mission to protect the environment and wildlife, highlighting the Science Department’s activities in biodiversity conservation and forest fire management.
