On May 7 and 8, 2025, Gorongosa National Park (GNP) hosted 25 community leaders from Guma, Matondo, Chidanga, Chirimadzi and Maciambosa in the Coutada 12 area. This annual visit was coordinated by the Community Relations Sector, led by Director Hercilia Chipanga Martins, with the aim of strengthening the commitment to biodiversity conservation and aligning the interventions carried out with the expectations and needs of the Coutada 12 communities.
During their stay in the Park, the leaders had the opportunity to interact with the Park Administrator, Pedro Muagura, where they were able to address issues of concern to them. They had some time to interact with the conservation team during their visit to the Pangolins rehabilitation center, which was very interesting and participatory. There was also a moment of reflection on their significant contribution to conservation and community development, discussing the mobile electric fence pilot project and the ongoing consultation process with the district government. Finally, they closed the day with a safari to the tando (floodplain) where they were able to see their animals and those of all Mozambicans at first hand.
On the second day, the leaders met with the PNG Community Relations team where they discussed the importance of working together for conservation. In addition, the need for support in the fight against illegal hunting was addressed, highlighting collaboration to protect biodiversity and strengthen ties between the Park and local communities.
With these joint efforts, PNG remains committed to developing an inclusive and sustainable approach to biodiversity conservation, involving community leaders and promoting the preservation of ecosystems at a local level.
