Where women lead, nature thrives.

On March 18, 2025, Gorongosa National Park held a special event in honor of all women and girls, led by Mércia Ângela (Veterinarian) and Emília Augusto (Ranger). With the theme: “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment”, it brought together around 13 women from departments of communication and conservation to promote debate on the empowerment and integral development of women in the field of conservation.

The event was full of inspiring and enriching moments. Participants discussed stories of overcoming adversity, mental health, and strategies to strengthen women’s presence in conservation. They also had the pleasure of planting trees in honor of the women who make a difference in our lives and in our mission to protect the environment.

As we work toward a 50% women-led workforce for Gorongosa National Park, their impact continues to grow. We celebrated our trailblazers in science, conservation, tourism, and more during Women’s Month. From International Women’s Day to Mozambique’s National Women’s Day, we were about unity in action. “In the different activities we do, there should be no gender separation, because we are all equal. Women can do the same activities as men and this creates motivation for those who suffer prejudice. My name is Celina Mourinho Alfredo Dias and I’m a research technician in the scientific department. When I started working in the field, my community questioned me because, thay had a different view of the limits of a man and a woman. Helena Fanhero

“My name is Helena Fanhero. I work in the Oficial de Género do Sector de Relações Comunitárias. As I work with hundreds of women on a daily basis, I am more convinced that what women need is not to be taught what it means to be a woman, but to be awakened to the strength they already have and that is inherent in them just by being a woman. So let every woman who has already awakened be the catalyst for another woman. Let’s join forces and shine the light that we all have, because only then will the world be properly radiant. Happy Women’s Month!”

We would like to thank all of the participants and supporters who helped make Women’s month special. Together we are stronger and will continue to fight for women’s rights, equality and empowerment in Gorongosa National Park and around the world.
